samenvatting: A wide range of subjects which are relevant to transsexualism is covered. Various words and terms used in connection with the subject are explained, gender and sexuality are discussed, and various relationships transsexuals have throughout their lives (including family, spouses, and children) are explored, as well as how their conditions affect those relationships. The years transsexuals spent in school and how transsexuals' conditions affect careers are dealt with; childhood and the feelings transsexuals experience are explored, as well as how the condition affects persons as they become adults. Many of the problems transsexuals have to cope with are examined, and the medical, surgical, and psychiatric care of transsexuals are all looked at. What happens to transsexuals after they have surgery is probed and the subject of androgyny as it may relate to transsexualism is explored. Finally the possible causes of transsexualism and how transsexuals and their loved ones can possibly find some common ground to understand each other are dealt with. Throughout the book the attitudes and feelings transsexuals have, are discussed, as well as how they are viewed by society and why. The study is based on two years of research involving carefully structured, in-depth personal interviews with seventy-five transsexuals, consultations with members of the medical and mental health communities, and conversations with loved ones of transsexuals.

Self-made men : identity and embodiment among transsexual men  /

Henry Rubin.Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt University Press, 2003 - 232 p.
uitgave: Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt University Press, 2003 - 232 p.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: In Self-Made Men, Henry Rubin explores the production of male identities in the lives of twenty-two FTM transsexuals--people who have changed their sex from female to male. The author relates the compelling personal narratives of his subjects to the historical emergence of FTM as an identity category. In the interviews that form the heart of the book, the FTMs speak about their struggles to define themselves and their diverse experiences, from the pressures of gender conformity in adolescence to being mistaken for "butch lesbians," from hormone treatments and surgeries to relationships with families, partners, and acquaintances. Their stories of feeling betrayed by their bodies and of undergoing a "second puberty" are vivid and thought-provoking. Throughout the interviews, the subjects' claims to having "core male identities" are remarkably consistent and thus challenge anti-essentialist assumptions in current theories of gender, embodiment, and identity. Rubin uses two key methods to analyze and interpret his findings. Adapting Foucault's notions of genealogy, he highlights the social construction of gender categories and identities. His account of the history of endocrinology and medical technologies for transforming bodies demonstrates that the "family resemblance" between transsexuals and intersexuals was a necessary postulate for medical intervention into the lives of the emerging FTMs. The book also explores the historical emergence of the category of FTM transsexual as distinguished from the category of lesbian woman and the resultant ?border disputes? over identity between the two groups. Rubin complements this approach with phenomenological concepts that stress the importance of lived experience and the individual's capacity for knowledge and action. An important contribution to several fields, including sociology of the body, gender and masculinity, human development, and the history of science, Self-Made Men will be of interest to anyone who has seriously pondered what it means to be a man and how men become men. Henry Rubin is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tufts University.

Transforming Couples and Families: A Trans-Formative Therapeutic Model for Working with the Loved-Ones of Gender-Divergent Youth and Trans-Identified Adults  / Rupert Raj.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 4 (2008) 2, p. 133-163
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 4 (2008) 2 , p. 133-163
samenvatting: The recent emergence of gender-divergent youth and trans-identified adults presenting in therapy, in tandem with the scant clinical work with their partners and families, indicates a serious gap in the research literature. In addition, there is a critical need for an increase of clinically-sensitive and culturally-competent therapists who can provide support for these transforming couples and families. To be effective, such treatment interventions must be grounded in a sound body of gender-diverse and transgender knowledge. This paper identifies a number of clinical issues experienced by gender-normative partners and family members (who are often an integral part of the transforming process) who are working towards acceptance of their gender-anormative loved-ones. Effective psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational interventions to help meet the challenges facing these transforming families and couples are outlined by means of the author's Trans-formative Therapeutic Model (TfTM). The model demonstrates ways to support the partner or family member(s) in conjunction with the trans-identified or gender-divergent loved-one as a cohesive and dynamic systemic unit. Specific clinical application of the TfTM are illustrated through a case study of a young gender-divergent child and her family. [Copies are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Center. Views from both sides of the bridge : Gender, sexual legitimacy and transgender people's experiences of relationships  / Alex Iantaffi, Walter O. Bockting.

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 13 (2011) 3 (mar), p. 355-370
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 13 (2011) 3 (mar), p. 355-370
samenvatting: The aim of this paper is to examine whether transgender people's experiences of relationships are influenced by heteronormativity, the related concept of sexual legitimacy, and gender as a binary construct. Data from an Internet-based study of transgender people in the USA was used. Findings seem to indicate that participants were strongly influenced by heteronormative discourses. However, less rigid gender beliefs are associated with lower levels of internalised transphobia, which, in turn, are associated with higher levels of self-esteem. Transgender people can therefore find themselves in a double-bind where, on one hand, conforming to gender and sexual norms leads to validation by mainstream US society, but could possibly entail diminished psychological well-being.
